What is Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)?

Basal metabolism, also known as Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), is the amount of energy our body consumes at rest to maintain its basic functions. These functions include breathing, blood circulation, body temperature regulation, cell growth and renewal, and other fundamental processes required for survival.

In our clinic, we use the Q-NRG device, a state-of-the-art device that measures basal metabolism via indirect calorimetry. Q-NRG is the ultimate tool for developing personalised nutrition support programs to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding.

Factors Affecting RMR

RMR can be affected by various factors, such as:

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Body Mass
  • Genetic Predisposition
  • Hormonal Influences
  • Physical Condition

Why Is RMR Measurement Important?

Knowledge of RMR is essential for several reasons, such as:

  • Weight Management
  • Nutritional Planning
  • Athletic Performance Optimisation
  • Health and Wellness

To ensure the maximum possible accuracy of the measurements, it is essential to follow the instructions below:

  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior
  • Avoid consumption of any food or water for 4 hours before the measurement
  • Avoid smoking for 4 hours prior
  • Avoid any form of exercise on the day of the measurement
  • You should be in a state of rest for 20 minutes before the measurement
